About this title
Victoria is Claire's mother, and she has invited herself along. She bears little resemblance to the quiet relative Lucas imagined, proving sharp-tongued, playful and adept at taking every conversation somewhere unexpected. A straightforward break soon becomes an extended lesson in the gap between what he intends to do and how he actually behaves. Claire notices the small changes, while Lucas notices them too late and repeatedly responds badly. The holiday is far from finished, the pool still beckons, and Victoria continues to determine the pace. His carefully made plans may not survive the week.
