About this title
The conditions for restoring his money are presented almost like a tariff, with each level of allowance carrying a different demand, none of which he would have chosen. What he intended as a battle quickly ceases to resemble one. The humiliation he planned for her becomes a game whose rules they both understand better than either will admit, and neither appears eager to bring it to an end. His cards remain frozen and the terms remain entirely hers. The only unresolved question is which of them will first decide that they truly want to stop.
