The machines make an unusual hum. The employees hold their smiles a little too long. The dormitory for night workers has rules no one bothers to explain, and nobody there seems eager to leave. On Peter's first night, a soft hand reaches for him in the dark, offering his first clue about what the factory really produces. Each shift carries him farther down the line, while his contract says nothing about how to quit. He took the job for the money and told himself it would be temporary. Now he is beginning to wonder what the work will actually cost him.
