The machines hum strangely. The staff smile for slightly too long. The night workers’ dormitory has rules nobody troubles to explain, and no one appears eager to leave. On his first night, a soft hand reaches towards him in the darkness, and Peter begins to grasp what the factory might actually produce. Every shift draws him further along the line, while his contract says nothing about how to resign. He came for the wages and told himself the work was temporary. Now he is beginning to wonder what the job may demand in return.
