He promised himself he would maintain a safe distance, but an apartment this small offers few places to retreat. Their paths converge in the corridor, and the evenings settle into a familiar pattern that weakens his resolve. She never states what she wants. Instead, she provokes him, retreats behind an innocent expression, and allows the boundary between them to fade by degrees. Neither one makes a confession, and nothing between them is formally decided. They simply continue sharing the apartment while testing a rule they refuse to name aloud. With each encounter, the space he meant to preserve becomes smaller. The uncertainty is no longer whether the distance is disappearing, but how much remains and which of them will first recognize that it is gone.
