He promised himself that he would maintain a sensible distance. In such a small home, that pledge proves much harder to honour than it was to make. Their paths cross constantly, and every evening seems to repeat the same uneasy pattern. She never states what she wants. Instead, she needles him, retreats behind an innocent expression and allows the boundary between them to fade another fraction. Neither acknowledges what is happening, and nothing is resolved; they simply continue living together while testing a rule neither is prepared to discuss plainly. With the available space narrowing day by day, the question is how much separation is truly left, and which of them will first admit that it has disappeared.
