Nothing in the file mentioned that the intimidating crime boss would be a woman — or that she would spot his stakeout in about four minutes and find it adorable. She does not disappear; she toys with her new shadow, plainly enjoying herself. Between an amused partner, superiors losing their patience and a gangster queen who treats the whole operation as entertainment, the rookie's mission stops being about surveillance at all.
